About the event

Novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

The Yearling is the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1938 coming-of-age novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, set deep within the rugged backwoods of central Florida. The story follows young Jody Baxter as he matures on an isolated farm, confronting the hardships, beauty, and emotional realities of frontier life. Through Jody’s journey from innocence to responsibility, Rawlings crafts a timeless and deeply moving portrait of family, survival, and the bond between humans and nature. The novel became an extraordinary literary success, selling more than 250,000 copies.

Rawlings drew inspiration for The Yearling from the “Big Scrub” region of central Florida near Lake George and the Ocala National Forest. The narrative unfolds in the post–Civil War era, around 1878, vividly capturing the unforgiving yet breathtaking landscape of rural pioneer life.

The novel was adapted into a critically acclaimed 1946 motion picture starring Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman, further cementing its place as an American literary classic.

Author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote the novel while living in the community of Cross Creek, Florida. Today, visitors can explore her beautifully preserved home and farmstead, within the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park. The property remains much as it was during her residency beginning in 1928 and offers a fascinating glimpse into old Florida life. Surrounded by majestic oak trees, towering palms, and fragrant citrus groves, the estate reflects the quiet charm and natural beauty that inspired Rawlings’ celebrated work. The park is open on weekends for guided tours and special events.

Just a stone’s throw away is the renowned Yearling Restaurant & Inn, a cherished Florida landmark established in 1952. Celebrated for its authentic Southern-style cuisine and locally sourced menu, The Yearling Restaurant offers a memorable dining experience rich in regional flavor and charm.

Nestled beneath a canopy of majestic grandfather oaks, towering palms, and lush citrus groves, the property captures the timeless spirit of old Florida. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area, adding to the serene and distinctive country atmosphere that makes The Yearling so special.

Open on weekends for both lunch and dinner, the inn also welcomes overnight guests seeking a relaxing retreat.
